Flower seed
BC, Canada

Amanda, Sally, Ursula, Natalie, Neil and Yoda (the dog) write:

I am a home school mom of 4 great children (plus one happy dog) and we are going to be making our very first garden in the spring of 2002! We would be ever so grateful if anyone could share any flower seed of any sort. We are on an extremely tight budget but have a big empty yard so I am hoping some kind folks may have some excess seeds they would not mind sharing. I want to teach my children as much as I can about nature. I would love my children to learn about gardening and have the happy memories of growing and tending their own plants. Just any seeds you have extra of, would be a fantastic help to get our garden and our nature lessons going. I am really looking forward attracting some good bugs, birds and wildlife for the children to observe and recognize the value of preserving. Any info about the plant seeds would be welcome to assist my teaching about other countries and areas and the heritage and homeland of the plants we are trying to grow.

If you can help then please let us know using the Exchange form (you can use the link above) and we will pass the message along.

Shrimp Plant?
USA

Can anyone help Linda? :

I am looking for a slip of an old house plant my Grandmother had. She called it a shrimp plant. It had elongated flowers that looked like a shrimp.

If you can help then please let us know using the Exchange form (you can use the link above) and we will pass the message along.

Mel from the UK replies:

Linda, the shrimp plant is known here as Justicia Brandegeana (syn. Beloperone guttata, Drejerella guttata). It is an evergreen rounded shrub, intermittently, but mainly in summer, producing white flowers surrounded by shrimp-pink bracts.
If there are humming birds in your area, it is a humming bird magnet!
 Thanks Mel - Ed.

Theresa from the USA replies:

Linda: I have a plant I use in my deck planters as a filler. It has pale foliage and a flower that is red - I call it devil's tongue. It could be related to what you're remembering.
 Thanks Theresa - Ed.

Macaw from the USA replies: I am responding to shrimp plant. I have two of these plants. I am trying to root it right now if it works I can send you a cutting. They are red with a white tip.
 Thanks Macaw - Ed.

Kathy from the USA replies: I live in AZ.(Zone 9) & we have a plant here we call AZ Bird of Paradise. It looks much like the Mexican Variety, however, it has volumptuous yellow blooms that attract both butterflies & bees and when the seed pods come on, the birds, as well. It makes a good 'shade' plant on edges of gardens when fully grown (approx 6 ft.high & as round as you want - 4ft. t 6 ft. across) It's branches resemble a Lysiloma or Mimosa Tree with their 'lacy' leaves. Interested? New batch of seeds coming on. Will give instructions on planting, really easy!
Thanks Kathy - Ed.
