Hydrangea
Donna from the USA asks:
I have Annabelle Hydrangias and I know they bloom on new growth. Every winter I cut them back to the ground and in the spring they sprout right up and are loaded with blooms from spring through fall. My problem is that because they bloom on new growth the branches are new and the plants become so heavy the branches cannot support the blooms and they fall over to the ground. What can I do to avoid this?
Amy from the UK replies:

I have the same problem with hydraenga branches on my 4yr old plant, drooping over after rain, wind or simply their weight. I place a good strong cane in soil either center or behind. Tie string or garden twine firmly to stake and wrap around each stem, drawing them up to required height. I let them droop when it rains to prevent the petals browning off, them hoist them up again in sunny weather to display their blooms at best. Kept in this position the stems grow strong as they harden, then I prune one third back in December for 400% bloom increase.

Thanks Amy - Ed.

Rabbit's Foot Fern
Jonathan from the USA asks:
I have a 39 year old rabbit's foot fern and recently I put just a handful of earthworm castings in its pot. About three weeks later (and for the past month now) I noticed that what were healthy young leafs (fronds?) were now browning and falling off of the plant. It has areas on it with little spider-like webs (but much stronger than typical spider webs) and it is losing a lot of its foliage. I'd be really bummed if I lost my prized fern to this pest and I am hoping that somebody has a solution for me to apply to my ailing fern. Is it spider mite sounding? Could they have come from the earthworm castings? Thank you for any advice that you may have.
Light

Azelea
Velma from the USA asks:
We are having a problem with our Azaleas, they are yellow leaved, and have been now for a year. How do I solve this problem? One of the bushes looks like it is dying. I have put some salt with some water to each bush, like someone suggested, but no help.
Allison replies:

The soil may not be good. Are they fertilized? I would say that although they could have a disease, look something up to see what kind. They might be recieving not enough light or tooo much. Many people don't know that azaleas don't like scorching sun. Sometimes they just take a while to get established. Water and roots can be a problem though, azalea roots sometimes pop up, checck to see. Water and humidity are often a problem though, mist them occasionly if the air is dry, and water them deeply, deep watering is sometimes important. They do not soak water deep to theire roots well.; Make a small, hole, do not disturb the roots, and water, (in spring and summer maybe fall, only winter if they are dying, because the water can freeze, water in the summer at night. Water for a day or, depending on how much it needs, overnight.. Oh, and do not prune too heavily, when young.

Thanks Allison - Ed.

Bill from the USA asks:

Cally Lillys
Lori from the USA asks:
How do you take care of Calla Lillies? Water? Sunlight?
Allison replies:

Calla lillies need shade and no frost, they don't really like cold. Bring them in when it gets cool in the fall, let tops dry out and store bulbs, tubers etc. or, treat as a housplant with moderate indoor light, (you don't need grow lights). (Leave out all year round in warm climates, zones, 8-. Keep in the shade outside, fertile soil. moist but not wet, if using for cut flowers cut stalks near base.

Currently the tree cannot support its own weight and is supported by a kite stick. Should the leaves be thinned out from top to bottom? Should the lower branches be pruned off all together? Cally Lillys
Valerie from the USA asks:

I have a two part question: I was given 5 calla lily plants in containers that looked sickly with thin, yellow, drooping stalks. After 6 weeks of care, they started to perk up and ALL of their old yellow stalks died away as the new growth rapidly took over. Is that a normal part of the calla cycle ? Do Callas usually shed ALL of their old stalks in anticipation for new growth?

Secondly: Now that my 5 callas are doing beautifully, I see clusters of little tiny flies in the dirt and when I water they crawl & fly all over the place including in my eyes? Over the last few months they have increased in number. Could these be white flies and how do I get rid of them without chemicals?

Hydrangea
Christy from the USA asks:
I understand the color of blooms on a hydrangia depend on the iron content in the soil. My first question is whether or not this is true? And, if this is true, what is the iron content needed in order to get a light blue blossom to bloom dark purple? I have seen some of these recently and would like to have them in my garden as well.
Marjorie from the USA replies:

To make them blue, buy aluminum sulphate in your gardening store. The directions for mixing with water are on the package but it's 1tb per gal. Water the plant once a week starting in the spring.

Thanks Marjorie - Ed.

Hydrangea
Larita from the USA asks:
I have a hydranga plant I would like to move because it has not bloomed. When is the best time to do so? I live in Iowa.
Marian replies:

Did you prune your Hydrangea this year or last year?
-If you did! Then you should get flowers next year or after two years.
-If that's not the case then you can check if the conditions are optimal for your Hydrangea.
-If the conditions are good, maybe your Hydrangea has a disease. Does it look healthy to you?

Hydrangea growing conditions:
Well drained, moist to dry soil that must be rich. The soil should be acid to neutral and consist of sand or need loamy, clayish-humus. Blue flowers need acid soil for there colour. You can plant the Hydrangea in half shade or shade. Don't plant it in a windy place.

Kiwifruit
Mike from Australia asks:
How can you tell the difference between a male and a female Kiwifruit plant?
Yourgarden.com's Specialist - Marian responded a some time ago to a question about Kiwi gender with: You can see the difference between the female and male kiwifruit by looking at the flowers of the vines. The female flowers have an obvoius potential little kiwi in the flower, just like a femal pumpkin flower. The male only has the anthers that hold the pollen in the flowers. So you have to look very carefully when the vines are flowering.
Hibiscus
Connie from the USA asks:
I live in VA and have several Hibiscus bushes, and wonder if it is safe to keep them in the ground for the winter months? If so should they be covered?
Hydrangea
Kelly from the USA asks:
Please can anyone tell me how to re-plant a inside Hydrageas outside, we live in Michigan.
Marjorie from the USA replies:

A potted hydrangea can be planted directly in the ground by digging a hole the size of the pot. Loosen the dirt in the bottom of the hole and fill it half full with water. When the water has drained, set the plant in the hole even with the ground.
Tamp the dirt down solidly. (you can add a very light mix of Miracle Gro or something similar to the water). The important part of planting the hydrangea is to put it in a protected area like next to the house and out of the wind. It can then later be moved after it's been established as an outdoor plant..

Thanks Marjorie - Ed.

Christine from the USA asks:
I want to change a shady hill of grass 30' x 30' to something that will be little to no maintenance. Can anyone give me info. on the different types of groundcover plants that would work best for Upstate NY? I am looking for options besides pachasandra.
Marjorie from the USA replies:

A good ground cover for the 30'x30' hill is English Ivy. I just saw that on a short trip and it was beautiful.

I have kept it inside and it receives morning sun (indirect) and I've watered it about once a week - I'm afraid it is dying - Can anyone give me any advice? I don't want to lose this plant!

Barbara from the USA asks:
I want to plant a semi-large border of pachasandra in front of my walk. The spot is very sunny in the Summer (I live in NJ).
