Many plants are poisonous but don't panic. Don't consume them and ensure that children and pets (who's instinct normally protects them) cannot get to the plant.

Bonsai
Rachel from the USA asks:

I just resently got a bonsai, my first one and everyday I watch it. Lately I have noticed a new brown substance on the ground near my tree and I remove it only to see it return the next day. At first I thought that it was just soil because that is what is looks like, but at a closer look, it is a cluster of bubbles. That is the best way to explain it. I am afraid that it is a fungus and may kill my plant. Does anyone know what this could be and how I may treat it? Please let me know because as you know, these plants are not cheap. Thank you.

George from Canada replies: Have you got 'hard' water. It may be crystals formed when the water has soil and air contact. Try collecting some rain water to use on the indoor plants.

When is it the best time to water tomatoe plants?

Ann from the USA replies: My dad grew tomatoes for years and he would water the plants in the evening after the sun went down. He lived on the east coast so it was pretty hot during the day. He always watered after dark.
Thanks Ann - Ed..
George from Canada replies: If you water during a sunny day you have to be careful not to get any water on leaves as this can burn the plant. Another daytime watering issue is that during a hot day the surface water can quickly evaporate so that although you think the plants have had enough water, very little reaches the roots. I normally water in the evening, or better still, very early in the morning (ok for us insomniacs!).
Thanks George - Ed..

Pests
Paula from the UK asks:
What plants are best for a garden infested with slugs, or the best means of getting rid of them once and for all. I have pets and children and have tried beer, gravel, eggshells.
Yourgarden.com's Specialist - Marian replies: The best way is pest control to get rid of slugs but not in your case because you have children and pets. You tried already beer and sharp gravel, most of the times it helps. What you also can try is copper wire. Slugs will not cross over bare copper wire.
Katherine from the USA replies: You can kill slugs and snails with table salt. Go into the garden at dusk and look around plants, when you spot one of the "creatures" simply sprinkle them with your salt shaker. No harm to children, pets or the environment!
Thanks Katherine - Ed..
Ann from the USA replies: I have heard that there is a safe way to get rid of slugs in your garden, I think the name of the product is Sluggo. One other way is to go out after dark, especially in the rain, and take a sharp shovel and cut the slugs in half. Gross I know but it works. The salt technique is messy.
Thanks Ann - Ed..
M. Hudson from the USA replies: Someone told me last summer to try this, and it works: Take a sturdy pie plate shaped container and fill it with beer (!). Place it under your shrub/plant in the evening. The next morning your slug culprits are in it "neatly dead."
Thanks M. Hudson - Ed..

My Hydranga is about 13 years old and blooms every year beautifully. I have noticed this year, most of the stems/branches have little or no leaves. Can anyone tell me why this is and what to do about it? I am about to prune, but hesitant. All of my others are fine. Thanks.

Ginko
Melissa from the USA asks:

How to take care of an Outdoor Ginko Bonsai Tree?

Marisa from the USA replies: Must water every day if outdoors. Also, occasionally put plant, dish and all in a tub. Add enough water to just cover the top of the dirt. Watch it bubble. That's the air escaping, and it does wonders for the tree. Don't put the tree in full sun, the green may fade. Also, if it becomes too tall or leggy, gently snip off the top, or new growth.
Thanks Marisa - Ed..

Regena from the USA asks:

I just got a Bromeliad for mothers day some of the leaves are turning yellow how do I remove the dead leaves and they said I can plant it outside around my garden pond but I read therwise.... PLEASE let me know I love this plant?

Kenneth from the USA replies: The leaves as well as the flower will die off but be replaced by a new flower and leaves which will then last about 8 months. If the leaves are really brown you can cut them off but they should fall off themselves.
