Ann from the USA replies:

If you're moving an azalea from one part of your yard to another I would do it when the weather is cooler either in the spring or fall making sure you keep it well watered. If it is a small plant that you have just purchased and want to put it in the ground you could plant it when you get it but be sure to keep it moist as the chance of going into shock is higher during the hotter season. Some are for sunny areas and some do well in shade. Check the label when buying.

I was reading your info regarding the Chilean Fire Bush. I was wondering if this shrub could be propogated by cuttings or just by seeds as you mention on your site? Thanks.

Ann from the USA replies:

I have started cuttings from several plants by using a rooting hormone I purchased from the local nursery. It's very easy to do most annuals and some house plants. Just make your cut, dip the cut in the hormone and put it in the dirt. Make sure it is watered and not in too hot an area in the beginning. I also give it a good quality liquid fertilizer about 2 weeks later.

Miracle-bush Tomatoes
Patricia from the USA asks:

In response to Peterson, Ken and Nancy (all of USA) regarding MIRACLE BUSH TOMATO; I also ordered plants in 3/03, and in the middle of May I rec'd 3 pots with dirt... nothing ever sprouted. I am now mailing them my 2nd request for a refund, but I'm afraid, my gardening friends, that we've been "had". C'est la vie!

Avocado
Bill from the USA says:

Sprouting avocados is very easy. Place the seed upright in some washed sand and place outside in a shaded area, not in direct sunlight. The outer portion of the seed must be peeled away (the brown skin) on the outside. Place it in the pot with the pointed end up. Water it regularly as you would any other plant. When it reaches 8-10 inches tall, transplant it into a medium size pot with "potting" soil. Feed in regularly with miracle grown. If you wish for it to develop fruit, it must be placed in the ground and in sandy type soil. The plant must be protected from frost and temperatures below 40 degrees. Fruit will develop in 5-9 years depending on the type of seed. Develops into a large tree in about 10 years.
Thanks Bill - Ed.

Tomatoe
Bill from the USA says:

Some cause of blossom end rot are low calcium in the soil and a erratic rate of water application. Mark a calendar with the days of the week that you water and try to water every 2,3,4 day intervals. Keep the same number of days between the watering. Tomatoes must be watered on a regulated basis and not sporadic.
Thanks Bill - Ed.

Tomatoe
Sal from the USA asks:
I have a potted tomato plant, it has loads of blossoms, but, no fruit. The blossoms fall off. Please someone help.
Sherry from the USA replies:

I don't know that much about it, except that there is a product called, "tomato set", I think. It's a spray that you are supposed to spray on the flowers. This causes them to produce fruit. I think it's some kind of germination. You can probably ask someone at a nursery or hardware store about "tomato set"--this may not be the acutal product name, but they should know what you want and should be able to direct you to the right product. We've used it and it works well. Good luck.
Thanks Sherry - Ed.

Bill from the USA replies:

Tomato bloom drop off is usually caused by several different things. The most common is low night time temperatures compared to daytime temperatures and a high humidity rate for a extended period. Tomatoes really like full sun, low humidity rates for the blooms to set. Another cause of bloom drop off is caused by the lack of calcium in the soil. If you have experience this, mix some gypsum in the soil when you till it the next time and add bone meal. Another fix for this is mix 2 tablespoons of epson salt in a gallon of water and water each plant. This will only work on plants that have developed past the 7 week mark of life.
Thanks Bill - Ed.

Pineapple
Cindy from the USA asks:
When and how do I plant the top to a pineapple? I have known folks who have done this and I want to try it.
Alice from the USA replies:

To grow pineapple, chop off leaves with 2" of fruit. Place in aquarium sand and keep moist and sunny until roots start. Grow in sunny, sandy soil.
Thanks Alice - Ed.

Bill from the USA replies:

To make pineapple bloom in spring, place a dark plastic bag over the entire plant for about three weeks checking in every other day for water, etc. In about three weeks you will see the bloom start to develop. Remove the bag and water as normal. The bloom will develop into a full large fruit in about 6 months. Harvest and enjoy.
Thanks Bill - Ed.

Carol from the USA asks:

Do hydrangia's have to be planted directly into the ground or wlll a larger half barrel container work.

Mandevilla
Christine from Canada asks:

MANDEVILLA. My parents gave me one of these vines last week. It arrived with lush green leaves. After just a couple of days inside the bottom leaves started to turn yellow. I thought it wasn't getting enough sun so I planted it outside. My soil is heavy clay and I'm in Southern Ontario. I planted it in the ground in the pot it came in and added some 20-20-20 fertilizzer. In a matter of 3 days I seem to have killed the plant. The leaves have all gone brown and it is next to dead. We have not had a frost, although the nights have gotten cool but still above freezing. It is planted in full sun. Any ideas of what I've done wrong? It was not a young plant, it was wrapped around a bamboo pole that stood about 3 feet tall.

S. from the USA replies: Your Mandevilla doesn't like to be cold as it is a warm weather plant. But if you bring it inside, cut off all of the dead vines and water it once a week you'll start to see green in a few weeks to months. It should grow again and then you can place it outside when the summer weather returns to stay.
Thanks S. - Ed..

Azalea
Jim from the USA says:

I saw several questions about azaleas. I had nine of them (already established) while in Houston for eight years. They were planted three to four feet apart, and received mid-morning to mid-afternoon sun. It rains 42 inches per year in Houston. The key for me was cutting them back one-third every year after the bloom cycle. Azalea food per instructions on container. I kept these plants from 3 to 4 feet in height, and they bloomed every year.
Thanks Jim - Ed.
