Maple
Mia from the USA asks:

My husband & I moved a chinese maplea couple of feet from where it was planted due to a new addition added to the front of our home about two years ago. But this year only the two low branches have leaves, and all the top branches have nothing, except for a few leaves here and there but those are all dried out. Hydrangea
Nora from the USA says:

On pruning Hydrangeas, it depends on the type you have, I cut mine down to the gound every fall and get beautiful basketball size flowers every year, the neighbors have a different type that they don't prune and they also get flowers every year, however not as large as those on our bush.
Thanks Nora - Ed..

Hydrangea
Nora from the USA asks:

I have a small potted Hydrangea and am wondering if I should plant it outside in the ground, or put it out in the pot and attempt to get it to bloom again?

Jane from the USA replies: The reason to repot or bed a plant is to give more room for the roots to grow. If your Hydrangea is in a too small pot the you should replant it. If the pot is large and the plant not too large then you can leave it as it is for at least a another year.

I have a Hibicus scrub in my front yard that had very small leaves and only an occasional pink flower. I pruned it some this early spring and fertilized it which only helped a little. Should I drasticly prune it and hope the new growth will be an improvement?

Hydrangea
Carolyn from the USA asks:

If acid is needed to retain the blue color to hydrangias, what is needed to retain the pink color?

Louisa from the USA replies: Color variation depends on the amount of aluminum compounds in the flowers. These aluminum compounds are mostly found in "Acid Soil". If there is no aluminum present then the flowers are a pink. If aluminum is present then the flowers will bloom blue. The best way to check this to get a simple PH test from your garden center and then if necessary compensate the soil with the right fertilizer.
