If your tomatoes are getting blossom-end rot, which is when the blossoms or fruit begin to rot, you can use bone meal to give it a calcium supplement. Azaleas don't generally need pruning but if you want to reduce their height or give them a better shape prune them just after they've flowered, as the new flowerbuds for next spring will form on this year's wood.
Thanks Franzi - Ed..

Crocus
Pam from the USA asks:

My crocus bulbs arrived to late to plant outside, how do I keep them over the winter until I can plant them outside this spring?

Franzi from the UK replies: Can you not plant them outside because the ground is frozen or do you just think it's too late? If the ground isn't frozen you can still plant them outside until December, they'll just flower later. Otherwise plant them in pots and keep them in a cool area then plant them outside either in spring when they're still green or let the foliage die and plant them in autumn. Make sure you keep them fairly dry during summer though or they'll rot.
Thanks Franzi - Ed..

Rose Bush
Tonya from the USA asks:
In the spring, I purchased a Queen Elizabeth Rose bush. It was about knee high, and with out any blooms. I planted it, and during the summer it grew like a weed. Several stalks have come up and all of the branches are between 12 and 15 feet tall. The bush was very healthy, green full leaves. No spots or fungus. One problem, it has not produced one bloom, or even bud. What I can I do to correct this?
Moya Janko
from the UK replies:
About the Queen Elizabeth Rose - my mother used to grow them - they were a great favorite. They are very vigorous and do grow tall, and are very strong. As for not flowering, my first thought was that your reader had overfed it, causing considerable green growth. But my second thought is that she should persevere with the Rose, using nothing more than well rotted horse manure, and to prune it well. I cannot recall where your reader lived, but February/March time in the UK is the best time to dealt with the formative pruning. The plant needs to think it is being killed, to produce strong shoots and flowers. All that new growth really needs to be taken off so that the rose puts its energy into regenerating itself. Please keep going with it - they are such splendid roses. By the way, I hope it is in full sun? Otherwise, the plant could be just reaching for the sky. Best wishes. Viburnum
Ali from the UK asks:

Viburnum Davidii - I am very keen to have this in my garden - however, from gardening journals I have read that in order for the female to produce the blue berries a male plant is needed. As the plants are not labelled up as male and female in my local nursery, how can I ensure that I get one of each?. What should I look for in order to 'sex' the plant? Does the male plant have to be of the same species (Viburnum)or just the same genus? (could it be Viburnum Burkwoodii)?

I have built 6 raised beds in my garden area, they are 4'x 12'x 1 foot deep. It is going to take a lot of material to fill these boxes and I am wondering what the best mixture would be. All the material will have to be purchased. I was thinking of 2/3 top soil and 1/3 compost. Any suggestions?
