George from the USA asks:

When is the best time of year prune or shape my Gardinas?

On leggy older plants, cut back 1/3 of foliage just BEFORE their Spring growth spurt, around March 1st. Prune anytime LIGHLY for shape, but remember to prune AFTER a flush of blooms so you won't miss out on any of those fragrant flowers.
Thanks Frances - Ed.

Hydrangea

How can I dry cut hydrangias?

Pick flowers when petals begin to stiffen slightly. Place flower stems in a buck with 1 inch of water. As water evaporates and stems draw up moisture, the flowers heads will open wider and dry slow. Remove wilted foliage. For more compact dried bolssoms, hang individual flower stems upside down in a cool, dry location away from moisture and heat.

Hydrangea plants love to be moist not soggy. If you see them dropping indoors water them well in a sink they do tend to come back. After you enjoy them indoors plant them outside. My Hydrangeas do the best in my shaded garden, durning the hot summer I do make a point to make sure they are watered well.
Thanks Frances - Ed.

I bought a blue hydrangea at Meijer. It was doing great. Now it is November and it has turned at brown/black color. Is it dead or can I still save the plant?

Mary from the USA replies:

Hygrangea's naturally turn brown in fall. Just remove spent flowers. Depending on variety, stems should be cut down to ground in late fall, pruned slightly or not at all. Look at info on type you have and ask local nursey how to take care. They also grow well in the Northern climates with little care. Follow directions according to type you have. As for Lilacs, they should be pruned when spent flowers are removed.

Remove the bag and water as normal. The bloom will develop into a full large fruit in about 6 months. Harvest and enjoy.

Hedge
Denise from the USA asks:

I live in mountainous Foggy San Francisco. I recently had to uproot my entire front terraced yard because the hedges, which grew to 8 ft tall, invaded the sewer line. I want to replant with hedges that grow no taller than 4 feet with shallow roots as to not interrupt the retaining wall and sewer line again. Do you have any suggestions? The average low- year round is in the mid 40's and the average high is in the mid 60's. I get three months of heavy fog in the summer, so I think I should be looking for something that does well in partial shade. I would love to have some kind of flowering hedge as well. I was thinking of gardenias, but I believe they need a warmer climate. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Amarylis
Janice from the USA asks:

I live in the south and have a few amarylis. Some of them have bloomed and have produced these seeds. Will they produce bulbs from these seeds?

Andrew from the USA replies: Yes, it is possible to grow an amarylis from seed. To get seeds, make sure the flowers get pollenated. They need not be pollenated from a different plant. Once pollenated, you will need to wait several weeks for the seeds to ripen. You can tell that seeds are on their way when you see the green base of the flower start to swell up. Non-pollenated flowers will have their base totally shrivel up and shrink and turn yellow and brown. The stem of the pollenated bloom will remain green and firm. After several weeks, the seed pockets will darken and dry up, and they will naturally split open. Let them dry for a few days, and then you can remove the dark-brown, nearly black seeds. You should expect to get around 100 or more seeds per bloom. Wait for a few more days for the seeds to be totally dry. Then let them soak in water in a windowsill with sunlight. After a few days, you'll see a white root extend out of the seed. After a few more days, the first green leaf will appear. Once the root is about 1/2 inch to an inch long, plant the seedling, with the root down and the green facing up. Make sure it gets plenty of sunlight and that the soil remains moist. The shallow root depth means the seedling will require more frequent watering than a mature bulb. Take care of the seedling, and you'll have yourself a fully mature bulb, probably in 2 to 3 years. Good luck!
Thanks Andrew - Ed..

Crocus
Pam from the USA asks:

My crocus bulbs arrived to late to plant outside, how do I keep them over the winter until I can plant them outside this spring?

Franzi from the UK replies: Can you not plant them outside because the ground is frozen or do you just think it's too late? If the ground isn't frozen you can still plant them outside until December, they'll just flower later. Otherwise plant them in pots and keep them in a cool area then plant them outside either in spring when they're still green or let the foliage die and plant them in autumn. Make sure you keep them fairly dry during summer though or they'll rot.
Thanks Franzi - Ed..

Danny from the USA replies:

I always order them from people on ebay. The ebay sellers user names I usually order from are alleycat32, josefeen, mosaicmambo, mosaicsbymaria look in the above sellers ebay stores and maybe they have what you are looking for.
Thanks Danny - Ed.

We have been trying to find a supplier for you but without luck I'm afraid. A possible workaround is to not use small square mosaic tiles but to break a mirror into small pieces (hope you're not superstitious). Place the mirror in an old towel, a Home Depot should have some cheap mirror tiles, and carefully break the mirror using a hammer. Use wall tile glue to stick the pieces to the pot surface creating a 'crazy paving' effect. It is a fun puzzle and can also be done with old wall tiles to save you seven years bad luck! - Ed.

Why do some of the leaves on my Peace Lilly begin to turn black & crisp? If I don't cut them off, the entire leaf eventually turns crisp & black. It continues to happen, leaf by leaf. HELP!

Hydrangea
Mandy from the USA asks:

I bought a blue hydrangea at Meijer. It was doing great. Now it is November and it has turned at brown/black color. Is it dead or can I still save the plant?

Mary from the USA replies:

Hygrangea's naturally turn brown in fall. Just remove spent flowers. Depending on variety, stems should be cut down to ground in late fall, pruned slightly or not at all. Look at info on type you have and ask local nursey how to take care. They also grow well in the Northern climates with little care. Follow directions according to type you have. As for Lilacs, they should be pruned when spent flowers are removed.
Thanks Mary - Ed..

Hedges
Vanessa from the USA asks:

I want to cut my hedges, and someone told me if I cut and shape them while its cold will stop them from growing back so they will stay trim and I won't have to worry about cuting them again is this true?

Louise from the USA replies:

No. They will only stop growing in winter. Once the warmer spring weather arrives they will start growing again.
Thanks Louise - Ed..

Wisteria
Sarah from the USA asks:

Does Wisteria lose it's leaves/go dormant in winter, or is mine dying? The leaves are very dry and wilting quickly.

Mark from the Netherlands replies:

Don't worry this is normal. All the leaves fall off and you are left with just the stem. Before any frost arrives you can trim back unwanted growth which is a lot easier without the leaves. In the spring the blue flowers (in dutch the wisteria is called Blue Rain) appear before the leaves - a wonderful sight against the winding gnarled wood.
Thanks Mark - Ed..

Lillies
William from the USA asks:

I need help with my lilies and I am from Southern Wisconsin. If anyone knows about them please mail me. I lifted the original bulbs and all there babies. My thought was to store them over the winter in the garage here that is about 45 degrees, either in there own dirt in a bucket or in a nylon like panty hose. If anyone can help me let me know. I won't be planting them till next year after the frost is out. I am just not sure how to store them? Thanks.

Fig Tree
Frank from the USA asks:

I have a blue fig tree, 17' high with some 1 inch and 1/2 thick branches. I always cover it for winter months. Should I cover it now in that it is so big and mature. The winters in this region go from 10 to 40 degrees on average. Thank you.

Clairadendron
Debbie from the USA asks:

I have a tree that the florist told me was a starburst. I found out it is called a clairadendron. It has gotten to about 6ft tall and spreading very nicely. It gets beautifull flowers that look like a star burst. Iam sure that it is in the rhodadendron family but I can't seem to find out anything about it. I am concernd about winter care. I live in plant city Florida. Can anyone help me out?

Hibiscus
Michelle from the USA asks:

I live in a zone ten. My fancy hybird hibiscus keep dropping their buds just days before opening. I have a dozen other hibiscus and none of them have had this probelm in 12 years. Why is this happening?

Tomatoes
Sherry from the USA asks:
I have trouble transplanting tomatoes. Can anyone tell me what is second true leave?
Marshall from the USA replies:

True leaves have scalloped/indentations compared with the first leaves which emerge through the soil. Transplant survival increases with stem size.
Handle transplants by a leaf instead of the stem. An old ball point pen makes a good dibble to open the planting hole. I transplant up to individual pots (I use 1/2 pint milk cartons).
When setting into the garden, a fistfull of gypson will reduce blossom end rot. Young plants have a high need for phosphate but go lightly.
Thanks Marshall - Ed.

Gardenia
Sannie from the USA asks:

I live in central florida and want to know when is the best time to trim my gardenia bushes back? Can I do it now (November)?

Frances from the USA replies:

On leggy older plants, cut back 1/3 of foliage just BEFORE their Spring growth spurt around March 1st. Prune anytime LIGHTLY for shape. But remember to prune AFTER a flush of Blooms so you won't miss out on any of those fragrant flowers.
Thanks Frances - Ed.

Strawberry
Heather from Canada asks:

I presently have two lovely, healthy potted strawberry plants, which are still flowering and producing fruits. I brought them inside for the winter and placed them in my kitchen, what can I do to keep them fruiting and healthy? Thanks.

Hibiscus
Heather from Canada asks:

My potted hybrid hibiscus, when brought in for the winter-little white insects appear n the leaves, I have tried several store bought products, but they leave a sticky film on the leaves, and then the leaves turn yellow. It is now November, and the trees are still blooming. How do I stop the little white insects from breeding, and will the plants flower throughtout the winter while inside, or do they go dormant. Also I have one hibicus plant which never flowers while the rest surrounding it does. Any help will be greatly appreciated,Thanks.

Plant feeding
Matthew from the USA asks:

I am researching a project for school and Ijust want to ask for your hypothesis on: Would plants grow stronger and healthier with Miracle Grow, or H2O? Ijust want your guess, I really appreciate it.

A plant feed such as Miracle Grow contains elements that function like vitamins do for humans. Sometimes your diet needs 'boosting', for example in winter, when there is less sun, some additional vitamin C (oranges) can give you a bit more energy. Plants can grow for years in the same pot or in the same spot in the garden. The plant will use up the food in the ground which plant feed such as Miracle Grow will help put back. Water (H2O) contains the elements hydrogen en oxygen, very important to plants, but not enough to live on. So our guess is that a plant will grow stronger and healthier with an extra feed and water.
- Hope this helps, Ed..

Houseplants
Ann from Canada asks:

Most of my houseplants are growing mold in the dirt. Why and how do I stop this. They are starting to look really sick and the leaves are turnong yellow and falling off.

Frances from the USA replies:

It sound like you might have to much moisture in the soil. Try culltivating the soil and keep an eye on your watering, let the soil dry a bit. Trim back the branches that have lots their leaves, the plant will get stronger and busher. And most indoor plants like inderect lighting. Good Luck! .
Thanks Frances - Ed.

How do Poinsettas turn red. I mean scientifically?

Tomatoe
Sal from the USA asks:
I have a potted tomato plant, it has loads of blossoms, but, no fruit. The blossoms fall off. Please someone help.
Sherry from the USA replies:

I don't know that much about it, except that there is a product called, "tomato set", I think. It's a spray that you are supposed to spray on the flowers. This causes them to produce fruit. I think it's some kind of germination. You can probably ask someone at a nursery or hardware store about "tomato set"--this may not be the acutal product name, but they should know what you want and should be able to direct you to the right product. We've used it and it works well. Good luck.
Thanks Sherry - Ed.

Bill from the USA replies:

Tomato bloom drop off is usually caused by several different things. The most common is low night time temperatures compared to daytime temperatures and a high humidity rate for a extended period. Tomatoes really like full sun, low humidity rates for the blooms to set. Another cause of bloom drop off is caused by the lack of calcium in the soil. If you have experience this, mix some gypsum in the soil when you till it the next time and add bone meal. Another fix for this is mix 2 tablespoons of epson salt in a gallon of water and water each plant. This will only work on plants that have developed past the 7 week mark of life.
Thanks Bill - Ed.

Cut Flowers
Cole from the USA asks:

How do I keep a cut flower alive the longest?

Joyce from the USA replies:

Cut the bottom of the stems at an angle to provide a larger area for the flower to suck up the water. Use luke warm water and not cold water then add a teaspoon of sugar to the water.
Thanks Joyce - Ed..
