Amarylis
Janice from the USA asks:

I live in the south and have a few amarylis. Some of them have bloomed and have produced these seeds. Will they produce bulbs from these seeds?

Andrew from the USA replies: Yes, it is possible to grow an amarylis from seed. To get seeds, make sure the flowers get pollenated. They need not be pollenated from a different plant. Once pollenated, you will need to wait several weeks for the seeds to ripen. You can tell that seeds are on their way when you see the green base of the flower start to swell up. Non-pollenated flowers will have their base totally shrivel up and shrink and turn yellow and brown. The stem of the pollenated bloom will remain green and firm. After several weeks, the seed pockets will darken and dry up, and they will naturally split open. Let them dry for a few days, and then you can remove the dark-brown, nearly black seeds. You should expect to get around 100 or more seeds per bloom. Wait for a few more days for the seeds to be totally dry. Then let them soak in water in a windowsill with sunlight. After a few days, you'll see a white root extend out of the seed. After a few more days, the first green leaf will appear. Once the root is about 1/2 inch to an inch long, plant the seedling, with the root down and the green facing up. Make sure it gets plenty of sunlight and that the soil remains moist. The shallow root depth means the seedling will require more frequent watering than a mature bulb. Take care of the seedling, and you'll have yourself a fully mature bulb, probably in 2 to 3 years. Good luck!
Thanks Andrew - Ed..
Hydrangea
MLH from the USA asks:

My mom sent me a potted blue hydrangia. I keep the plant in my office at work. The first week the plant was perfect but since then the flowers have all wilted. I was wondering if the flouresent lights have anything to do with that. What is the best way to care for potted hydrangias?

Frances from the USA replies:

Hydrangea plants love to be moist not soggy. If you see them dropping indoors water them well in a sink they do tend to come back. After you enjoy them indoors plant them outside. My Hydrangeas do the best in my shaded garden, durning the hot summer I do make a point to make sure they are watered well.
Thanks Frances - Ed.

Peace Lily

Is it possible to plant the seed from a peace lilly flower and grow plants? If so, what kind of soil do you use? Do you plant the seed directly into the soil?

Pests
Lenora from the USA asks:

My decorative bushes are now covered with spider-like webs, now spreading to ground ivy and adjacent foliage. What to do?

Alyce from the USA replies:

The description sounds like some kind of spider mite. If that's true, and if it is possible, wipe or rub off as many leaves as possible. You can also use strong water pressure from you hose and apply a systemic. The little critters are too small to try and treat topically, and the webbing gives them some protection. The systemic will poison them whenever they take a bite of your plant.
Thanks Alyce - Ed..

Hydrangea
Julie from the USA asks:
I recently planted 2 Pege Hydrangas, and they were growing to beat the band. Yesterday, I noticed that both plants have leaves that have rust color spots on them, and also some yellow leaves near the bottom. I am sick about this as I have always wanted Hydrangas. I planted them in a hole a little larger than the containter they were in, and then I water them with a Miracle gro mixture every week. Can I save them?
Alyce from the USA replies:

This is an answer for Julie, who recently planted a Pee Gee Hydrangea and is having yellow leaves towards the bottom. Unfortunately the signs for too much fertilizer and not enough fertilizer are very similar. But my best guess is that you are fertilizing too much. A newly planted shrub should not be fertilized at all for at least a week. The first feeding should be half strength, and then as normal. Miracle Grow is a harsh chemical fertilizer, and in my opinion should be used lightly. Also, make sure the plant is watered thoroughly when fertilizing to insure the new roots don't get burned.
Thanks Alyce - Ed..

Lemon Tree
Kris from the USA asks:

Azalea
Dawn from the USA asks:

I was recently in Europe and saw a Blue Azeala. Where can this be found in the US?

Achillea (Yarrow) is an easy to grow, yellow flowering plant that grows to between 2 to 4 feet high. It may need staking in windy gardens and it should be cut to ground level in autumn.
Ajuga (Bugle) is an undemanding plant that spreads between and under other plants. It only reaches 4 inches in height .
Campanula (Bellflower) has various varieties with blue or white flowers. They grow up to 3 feet tall (5 feet for the C. Latifolia!).
Euphorbia (Spurge) are the poor relation s of the Poinsetta (Christmas Star). They are used to fill gaps in the border with their foliage. They grow between 6 inches and 1.5 feet tall.
Geranium (Crane's bill) is a very popular white, pink, red or blue flowering plant. Covers the border suppressing weeds. Can have problems with slugs. Grows to about 1.5 feet tall.
Helianthus (Sunflower) is a giant. It can reach 6 feet plus in height.
Hosta (Plaintain Lily) is grown for it's broad leaves and it's spiky flowers. Grows to about 3 feet in height (flowers) and slugs can be a problem.
Liatris (Gayfeather) has purple spikes for flowers and grows to about 1.5 feet tall. It dies right back in winter but reappears next spring.
Phlox is a colourfull herbaceous plant the grows to between 2 to 4 feet tall. It can have 'eelworm' problems and may need supporting on windy sites.
Sedum (Stonecrop) is a fleshy-leaved plant. They thrive in hot/dry conditions. Between 1 and 2 feet in height they do need cutting down to ground level once flowering is over.

Peace Lily
Marcia from the USA asks:

When I first bought my Peace Lily the leaves started turning black. I thought the plant was too big for the pot so I transplanted it into a much larger one. I cut off all the black leaves and some of the remaining ones are starting to turn black. (I have my plant sitting to the side of a large picture window.) What am I doing wrong? When can you tell the plant needs to be watered? In such a large pot, the surface might be dry but I am afraid to over water it. My plant only had 3 Lilies on it and they also turned black so I cut them off and I haven't had another lily bloom since. Can someone give me some advice? I would greatly appreciate it....Thank you

Yard help
Deb from the USA asks:

I live in the country in the north central part of Oklahoma. It is very windy out here. I would like to know what I should do this time of year to help my yard look nice come spring and next summer. I have used "weed & feed" in the spring. I still had alot of weeds. The grass I thought was the prettiest was mostly under shade trees and died off the earliest. I would like to have a nice lush green grass with less weeds next spring. Some of the grass has wide blades and is in clumps. I don't know what it is but I don't like it. Weed and feed is the only thing I've done to my yard except mow it and occasionally water it. Any suggestions would be graciously appreciated as I am a novice. Thank you?

Lillies
Tanya from Canada asks:

Hydrangea
Casie from the USA says:

Some people asked why their blue hydrangas aren't blooming. It is possibly because they aren't getting enought sun to bloom. They need just the right amount of sun to bloom, because if they get too much where its hot the leaves will droop. So keep the roots moist in the sun. The other reason why they may not be blooming is because you're pruning them. Stop pruning! The only time you can prune a blue hydranga is within two weeks after they bloom. So if you pruned in the fall or summer or anyother time this year they will not bloom next year. So you will have to wait until they bloom again (spring 2004, I think) and prune within two weeks after blooming. The reason why this happens is because the blooms come off of the old growth and if you prune it in summer or fall you are cutting off next years blooms. Also, blue hydrangas need acidic soil to bloom blue, therefore you will have to add something like mir-acid (a miricle-gro product) or soil sulfer, or else the bloom will be a pale pink.

Black spots on hydrangas may be caused by too much water being on the leaves. If it is humid or rains a lot it could cause some sort of fungus which makes black spots. This generally happens to the older leaves toward the end of summer as the plant puts more energy into the rooting system for winter
Thanks Casie - Ed.

Rhododendron
Mariann from Canada asks:

My roddie bloomed this summer and was just georgious;but now it is looking very sickly. I ran water on it with the hose the other day for about 1 hour. Just a gental flow. I gave it more sulpher and when I planted it 2 yrs ago I dug out the soil and replaced it with bark mulch and wet peat moss. I raised the dirt up and put pine needles around it. It is planted in the north west corner. Please help.

Miracle-gro
James from the USA asks:

I use miracle-gro soil for all my house plants. The other day I was caring for them and in the soil of a few of them i noticed small liquid filled yellowish beads in the soil. The sort of resemble Vitamin-E pills except much smaller. They are on the surface of the soil and also down in the soil. I pulled alot of them out. They break with any pressure and liquid comes out of them. PLEASE HELP. Are these normal? Is it a fungus? I just started to grow houseplants and have fallen in love with the ones I have and don't want to lose them.... Can anyone tell me what to do? Please. Thank you

Laura from the USA replies:

The little yellow beads are normal in the Miracle Grow dirt. They are capsules that are released to help the plant grow. They work well, especially in house plants. So, don't worry, your plants will do great
Thanks Laura - Ed.

Calla Lilly
Jennifer from the USA asks:

I bought a potted calla lilly plant have no idea how to take care of it. The leaves are starting to turn yellow, why? Can I keep it indoors?

Casie from the USA replies:

Caring for your Calla Lily depends on where you live, or what hardiness zone you're in. the calla lily is not hardy in many zones, and will die in the winter if it isn't dug up and stored in the winter. the coolest temp it will live through is 50-55 degrees F. it should be dug when the leaves turn yellow or when foliage is damaged by frost. store the rhizome (root thing) in sphagnum peat moss or vermiculite in a cool dark place.

Thanks Casie - Ed..
