Roses
Cherry from Australia says:

A home brew for roses: which seemsto prevent attack from both fungi & insects: 10-litre bucket. Agitate a pure soap such as laundry cake soap to create good lather. Then mix in 7 tsps. of baking soda nd the appropriate quantity of pyrethrum concentrate, as per the pack instructions. This has prved to be effective against black spot, rust and powdery mildew as well as insect attacks from aphids, thrips, and caterpillars. Spray this brew every 3 mos. to keep bushes clean of problems.

What tips do you have for me to ensure that my rhodadendron will be happy living in this large pot instead of being planted in the ground? Also, what can I do with it in the winter to ensure that it will be around when I want to plant it in the spring? Will this rhodadendron plant live for years if it is taken good care of? Hibiscus
Cammie from the USA asks:

What's wrong with my Hibiscus? The buds fall off before opening. The plant looks perfectly healthy otherwise.

Maria from the USA replies:

I have a beautiful hibiscus that's been with me for years now. They love bright, yet indirect light and love to be moist. Every now and again when I have left over coffee in my pot that has cooled off, I add a little water to it and pour it into the plant. They enjoy the high acid. Occasionally, I add some used coffee grounds to the dirt. Every summer, I put my Hibiscus outside on the patio. I notice the leaves grow smaller and thicker when outside. In the winter, I bring my hibiscus inside, and keep it in the brightest room I have. The leaves grow very large and paper thin during this time. When I first put the hibiscus outside (after threat of frost is gone) I notice the large paper thin leaves will dry up and fall off, with smaller thicker ones replacing them. During this time, I keep the soil moist, and never let it dry. I give it miracle grow twice a year and keep it pruned. It really brings a smile to my face when it erupts with blooms. Enjoy!

Thanks Maria - Ed..

Pests
MMatsumoto from the USA asks:

How to get rid of animals who use space under my deck as a bathroom?

Sabrina from Belgium replies:

Leave the feces there and cover it up, if you have a dead rat or squirrel that has been killed by an animal, put it under and cover it up with dirt. Pack it down with your shoe. The smell will deter any pest (animals) from going and doing their thing. Do not remove their feces.

Rhodedendron
Lorraine from the USA asks:

Should I "dead-head" the wilted blooms after my rhodedendrens are finished blooming? I noticed I had less blooms the following year after doing so.

Andrea from the USA replies:

Yes, you should remove the dead flower heads. This is best done by twisting the old blooms at their base, they twist off easily. I have several rhodedendrens and it takes me a whole day to twist of all the flower heads but the display the next year makes it all worthwhile.

Thanks Andrea - Ed.

Peace Lilly
Margaret from the USA says:

Many of you have questions about peace lilies. . . I've never had problems with my large one. They don't need any direct sunlight, just some light. I keep mine moist, but if the leaves turn yellow/brown, I know I've either under or overwatered it (this is typical in many plants). I've also found that my lily is happy when I wipe off its broad leaves every few weeks. Mine puts out new leaves but rarely flowers.

Thanks Margaret - Ed.

Tomatoe
Taylor from the USA asks:

When should tomatoes be planted where I live (Lake County)?

Pachesandra
Ben from the USA asks:
We want to transplant pachesandra. Any tips, cautions, etc.
Martin from the USA replies:

I have had little problems transplanting pachasandra. I just make sure that the plants I remove from my bed for transplanting have roots on the stems. The stems will develope roots when in contact with the soil. Just make sure they are well watered till the plants get well established. They do spread but it is not very invasive. I use pachasandra for a ground cover because it is dense and not very tall. I believe it makes a much better ground cover than ivy for those reasons. Good luck.

Thanks Martin - Ed.

Calla Lily
Debra from the USA says:

I've got Calla Lilly's, white, black and pink. They're my favorite flower. They are easy to grow. In answering some of these questions, I'll explane the prosses they go through, through-out the year.

First, if you move or re-pot or split the callas they die back, not dying, but only to rid of shocked leaves. They quickly grow back. Health and new. All during the winter, I had healthy tall leaves. In the White calla garden, when spring hits, I had flowers galore. They seem to only last till the hot sun comes, around June. Always cutting the old leaves and ugly flowers, makes the calla's look fresh. That also help the groth of new flower and leaves.

After the spring flowers have opened, you'll have leaves falling, and new ones comming up from under. Cut the old ones back. Leaving any flowers and new leaves. The bulbs under the ground are multipling. So you will have more next year. I have my white callas in full sun. They really love it. I water every day, keeping the groung moist, but not wet.

I live 40 miles in land from San Fransico, so it gets pretty hot,In the summer, It's never under 70. The winters are as low as 30%. Always clipping my callas of old flowers and leaves is the secret to a beautiful and happy plant.

Now the pink callas I have in a pot, and they Hate the sun. They were dormant during the winter. The leaves died back. When spring came, I gave the pot some full sun to boost it, into growing. As soon as the flowers came up, I moved it to the shade. I'll have double the flowers next year. I have the bulbs in a pot with Asian Lillys. There happy being watered daily, but not wet.

The black callas were here when I moved in my house three years ago. There in the shade, and grow close to the grund. Only 8 inches high. Spreading just like a bulb. I've had two flowers in three years. I think that's why the are $44.00 a bulb.

Thanks Debra - Ed.

Please, any ideas for a better way to tie up my plants?

Jack from the USA replies:

Bushes 'in storage'
Ellen from the USA asks:

I need to remove my bushes, so we can redo a basement wall, but like to put them back, when the job is done. What is the best way to do that?

Frances from the USA replies:

Your bushes can be replanted. After digging them up put them in a larger pot that has drainage and with extra soil. Also cut them back. They will go through a big shock. Just remeber to water well and often. Plants in pots tend to dry out often than if they were in the ground. Feed them wont hurt them either. Just follow the directions and don't over fertilize.

Lawn
Michael from Jersey, UK asks:

We have recently moved into a new property with a lawn which has died for no apparent reason. When we dug up some of the soil, there were many brown/tan coloured pupae and caterpillars. Could these be the cause of the grass dying ? We now have a weedy soil area instead of a lawn. What would be the recommended way to treat / kill the bugs/weeds and restore our lawn ?

Frances from the USA replies:

It sounds like you have grubs 'yuk' we had the same experience. I heard it takes a good 5 years to kill the grubs. Soon after my husband had figured out what the problem was he was told to use a lawn ferterlizer that had a weed/'bug' killer in it. The grass did grow back fairly quickly but he fertlized the lawn quite often for a few years...(following the directions on the bag). Check out any nursery for further direction. Good luck, there is hope!

Azaleas
Kathi from the USA asks:

I was given an azela plant for Valentine's day. Should this be replanted outside?

Frances from the USA replies:

Some azalea are not for planting out doors, like the ones you have probably have seen in grocery stores. They can't handle the winter tempatures. But putting it outdoors in a shady location during the warm seasons and remembering to water it often should be okay. Azalea loves water but do not let it sit in water. And they don't bloom all year through but they do stay as a nice bush. With the correct amount of light they should re-bloom for you, plant food helps during the non-blooming periods. Enjoy it's a classy plant!

Thanks Frances - Ed.

Mirror Mosaic
Baird from the USA asks:
I read your article (Mirror mosaic magic - Ed) on how to make a decorative mirrored pot for planting. I'm having trouble locating any small square or rectangular mirrored tiles. I live in Las Vegas and have tried 2 arts and crafts type stores and Home Depot. Do you have suggestions of a web site or company to purchase from? I'd really appreciate it!
The article is
Danny from the USA replies:

I always order them from people on ebay. The ebay sellers user names I usually order from are alleycat32, josefeen, mosaicmambo, mosaicsbymaria look in the above sellers ebay stores and maybe they have what you are looking for.
Thanks Danny - Ed.

We have been trying to find a supplier for you but without luck I'm afraid. A possible workaround is to not use small square mosaic tiles but to break a mirror into small pieces (hope you're not superstitious). Place the mirror in an old towel, a Home Depot should have some cheap mirror tiles, and carefully break the mirror using a hammer. Use wall tile glue to stick the pieces to the pot surface creating a 'crazy paving' effect. It is a fun puzzle and can also be done with old wall tiles to save you seven years bad luck! - Ed.
Gardenia
Jane from the USA asks:
I noticed there were more questions regarding the gardinia than answers. Wish I could break the trend, but I can't. Our gardinia is now in the house. It spent the last summer outside and did beautifully and now has survived the winter inside. Recently we started misting it daily and beautiful, sweet, fragrant flowers began to bloom. In the beginning all were perfectly stark white. Many now are turning yellow and brown. Has anyone else had that experience? What is the solution? Can anyone help? Thanks so much!

Hydrangea
Barbara from the USA asks:
I have recieved a mophead hydrangea. Is it a bulb that will dye out at the end of the season and need to be replanted next year or will it stay a plant all year round?
Pete from the UK replies:

A mophead hydrangea is not a bulb but a shrub. Keep it watered and fed and it will give you years of pleasure. Don't cut of the 'dead' blooms until the next spring as this will improve flowering.

Thanks Pete - Ed.

Magnolia
Steven from the USA asks:
When is a good time to plant a magnolia tree I just move in to a new home my wife wants a magnolia tree. Am I to late to plant one? Someone please help me, thank you.
Frances from the USA replies:

My husband and 3 children bought me a Magnolia tree for mother's day one year. So we planted that srping and had very good luck with it. Just remember when planting a new tree to water it very well that first year so the roots can get established before the winter months come. Mulching is a good idea too. And please tell your wife she has very good taste, the magnolia tree is a very beautiful tree, not only for the blooms in the spring but the shape of a mature magnolia stands out on it's own.

Thanks Frances - Ed.

Clematis
April Leefrom the USA asks:
Is it possible to root a clipping from a clematis vine?
Mark from the Netherlands replies:

The best way to propogate clematis is to slice into a stem and push it into the ground (keep it attached to the mother plant). Push a couple of sticks diagonally into the ground crossing the planted stem to make sure it stays in place. Keep well watered and after a few weeks it will have grown roots. You can then cut the 'new' clematis from the mother and replant somewhere else.

Thanks Mark - Ed.

Hibiscus
Bob from the USA asks:
How do you take care of a Hibiscus Bush?
Frances from the USA replies:

Hibiscus care is very easy. They like water but they do not like to sit in water. They love direct sun so putting the plant on an open deck or patio is a great idea. The blooms only last one day, after they bloom just pinch of the dead blooms to keep the plant tidy. With correct watering and light your hibiscus will bloom through out the warm season. They don't like cold temps. So bring it in before the danger of frost. Put your hibscus near a bright light window and remember to keep in moist but not soggy. Letting it dry out with cause yellowing leaves and bud abortion. And it probable won't bloom as much as it would if it was out side in warm temps. If it blooms indoor becareful the pollen dosen't stain your walls or carpet. It's a great plant to have. Reminds me of Hawaii.

Thanks Frances - Ed.

Peace Lilly
Rich from the USA asks:
I just purchased a peace lilly. I wanted to place it in the bathroom, to keep it away from the sunlight. Is this a good idea? or does anyone have some basic instructions for me?
Eddie from the USA replies:

Answer to rich's question about peace lilly. Rich i'll tell you what may think is a good idea. Purchase a large clear vase, depending on size of your lilly, and listen i'm not crazy, shake off all the dirt from around the roots. Then place the roots in the vase, fill the vase with water and every 2 months or so add miracle grow to the water. You may want to add a beta fish to the vase, they seem to love the nutrients from the plant. i've had mine for 5 years now and its looking as good now as the day I bought it.

Thanks Eddie - Ed.
