The best time to plant spring flowering bulbs is late autumn (fall) and early winter. Daffodils, Tulips, Crocuses and Snowdrops are planted at a depth of two to three times their width.

After flowering and once the foliage has died down, the bulbs should be lifted and stored in a cool, dry place for planting again next autumn/winter.

Bulbs planted in a window box or other container should be kept frost-free (indoors) as they are exposed on all sides, not just from above as in ground planted bulbs.

It should be possible to get around 45 bulbs in a three by one foot window box, but, how about fewer Tulips and between them (and not so deep) some Crocus and/or Snowdrops. This will give a longer flowering period to enjoy.
