Aspidistra
Mrs Catherine Greenup from England asks: I was left this plant which is very old by a close friend before she died; she wanted someone who would care for it as she did; but never having owned an Aspidistra before I don`t know how to cure a problem which has developed. The leaves grow good and healthy for some time; but then they go yellow and burn brown at tips; all the leaves go the same way and I`m worried I might loose this old plant. Can anyone suggest how to help please.

shaun says : your probably watering it too much. let the soil dry out between waterings. if that doesnt do the trick ask at a garden centre.

chesney Doyle from usa asks: My yardman cut back to the ground my 40 year old aspidistras. He says they will grow back pretty and green. What next? My cousin has tons of these growing along the edge of the bayou behind her house. Should I just transplant and start over? I thought they took 2-5 years to reach maturity. I was using them as a major landscaping feature in the front yard, as a screen. They were 3 feet tall. Transplanted from my own back yard. (He cut about 75 feet of them in the back yard to the ground as well) What do I do?

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : Care for Aspidistra indoors, grow in a soil-based potting mix in bright filtered light. Water moderately in growing season, sparingly in winter. Once established, apply a balance liquid fertilizer monthly. Do you give it a fertilizer?

George Cameron from UK asks: Why are my aspidistra leaves going brown?

Help George Cameron with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : Maybe your aspidistra has two-spotted spider mites. Look on the undersides of leaves for these mites, they are very small, have dark areas on each side of the body. You can use a miticide for these mites. If that`s not the problem maybe you give the aspidistra to much water. Or the standing place can be wrong.
