colleen from south africa asks:
Hi, I have a huge bouganville that was growing over a wooden fence in my garden which I have pruned back completely - but since then it seems to be dead. It use to flower quite profusely, but for a couple of months now there is no flowering. I fear that I have killed this beautiful tree. Please tell me what I can do, and does it usually stay dormant, after such a huge pruning, for such a long time before flowering again. Help please

Lisa from USA asks:
We live in Florida and we have serveral bouganvilla`s, but the recent one we bought was growing very healthy then all of a sudden on part of the plant it started to look diseased and the leaves were falling off. But I also see new growth on the other part of the plant. I am familiar with the worms that eat the leaves but this is somthing different. What other diseases can a bouganvilla get and how do you treat them?

Have a 20 year old Bougainvillea bush in backyard, very large & wide. It has survived 3 Hurricaines. The problem is it does not have many flowers that bloom. Any suggestions, any thing I could put at the base of the bush to make it explode into the beautiful color it once was ? Thank You Ever So Much for your time. Regards, Jana

I have read many articles on Bougainvillea and they say not to water it until it has dried out and the leaves look a bit wilted. Sort of like a catcus is how I treat mine.. I still have mine in a pot but I do want to try next spring to plant it in the ground.. I also give my miracle grow about once a month.. I have thought at times I would loose mine but I water it good and it comes back just as pretty as ever. the articles I have read says the drying out put the plant in stress and that it blooms best when you let it get stressed and then water it good.
Hope this helps..

Pat Hansen from USA asks:
My bougainvillea was covered during a freeze warning but looks dead. The leaves are brown and crisp. I have been told it will come back (we live in Arizona), but it has been two weeks and I see no change. Should I trim it back and continue to wait? I don`t want to kill it.

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says :
Wait for a while. First be sure that the frost is not comming back then you can trim it back if nothings change.

C. Fredericks from USA asks:
We live in sourhtern CA and experienced unusual night time freezing temperatures for about 5 nights. Our two very large, glorious bouganvillas got hit and all the leaves appear to have been frozen. We were advised to wait 4-6- weeks before trimming which we are doing. Do you think the plants can survive a situation like this and do you agree to wait the 4-6 weeks to prune? Thanks

Dr. Sam from San Diego asks:
My husband and I recently put Miracle Grow plant food stakes into our garden near three flowering bouganvilla and a flowering hibiscus tree. Around that time, San Diego also experienced several days of 30 degree weather (rare for us). Now all the bouganvilla and the hibiscus look dead, and we are heartbroken. Did they die from the cold, or do they go dormant? Should we pull up the stakes? Is there anything we can do to help our trees?
We would be VERY grateful for any help!
Thank you!
Dr. Sam (clearly not a botanist!)

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says :
That is cold for a bougainville but maybe it is not dead. Wait for a while till the weather gets warmer. Maybe you have luck. I don`t know what kind of hibiscus you have maybe it is hardy so also wait, hope and see. When it gets colder you can bring them in to protect them. Place them in a coole place.

Can bouganvillas be planted in the ground if I live around San Antonio, TX or will they freeze?

Debbie says :
I live in Seguin and have beautiful bouganvillas in the ground. You will need to cover them with a blanket when a frost/freeze is expected. I water mine really well and cover them and leave the cover on for 10 days or so at a time if needed.
