The normal time to cut back a butterfly bush is late winter. This is done to control the height of the plant and make a pleasing shape for the development of flowering wood. Propagate by cuttings. In mid-summer take 4- to 6-inch cuttings, stripping off the lower set of leaves. Dab on a little rooting powder and plant them in moist soil.
