Cactus
Pam Noyes from United States asks: I bought a cactus plant that has several different ones in the dish. It was beautiful when I got it. I`ve had it for approximately 2 mo. Some of the cactus are turning brown at the base. I have removed some of the dried dead leaves. What causes this and what should I do. Would it be better if they were planted separately?

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : To propogate cacti you must first make a fresh cut without squashing it, and then let it dry out in a shady cool place for about a week. This makes a heel on the plant so it won`t rot and then put it in some clean rinsed sand. Don`t force it in, make a hole first then put it in. Leave it somewhere shady and just water it so its damp but not wet.

mary from usa asks: I think it is a barrel cactus. They are in a pot in the house, the 2 plants are about 2-3 feet tall now. I would like to separate them and put them in different pots but I am afraid i may loose them due to they look like at the bottom by the dirt they are touching each other, and i`m afraid the roots are together. How if possible can I separate them without hurting (loosing) them?

LuAnn Lause from USA asks: I have a cautus which belonged to a friend who has passed away. I have had it for three years. The first year I had it, a very unusual fuzzy protrusion started to grow out the side. It was very fast growing and in the course of several days it grew two inches. As it grew it started look less fuzzy and then the end developed into a flower. It was closed one minute and then just that quick it opened up and was white and very beautiful. In a matter of hours is started to wilt and within a day, it was gone. This occured in the summer. Last summer there was nothing. This summer, there were three grows within several weeks of each other. Two materialized into flowers, the third never developed. Prior to this summer I replanted this cautus in soil made just for cautus. Can you tell give me any information. This cautus it just what you would picture a basic round, prickly cautus to look like. It is only about 5 inches tal and may 2-3 inches in diameter. This summer it has had a grow of smaller cautus around the base of the large one. Thanks!!

connie from USA asks: My cactus has been growing beautifully upright, now in the last two weeks the stocks are tipping over. I only water it about once a month. It is quite large eight feet tall. What causes this? The person we got the cactus from has had the same problem. She cuts the stocks back. I hate to do that if it isn`t necessary. How do I remedy this situation.

Angie from Canada asks: I have been given some kind of cactus. It has long flat leaves that grow into tenticles at the ends. some leves have these pink squid like flowers on them. What is it called and when can I transplant it? Tks

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : I think you mean a christmas cactus: it can be transplant shortly after it has completed flowering, but don’t do it every year, as flowering actually is encouraged by the plant being pot-bound.

Donna from USA asks: My cautus is turning yellow - I didn`t over water it - what can I do

Help Donna with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : Is it getting enough sunshine? Be sure to give it the sunniest spot (southern facing) that you have. If it`s not getting anough sunshine the cactus can turn yellow (also overwatering).
