Betty from USA asks: My Calla Lilly is growing pods in the blooms. What is this?

Help Betty with an answer

DMS says : Those pods are seeds. Generally I cut them off early so that they don`t take away from next year`s flowers but occasionally I let one go to seed if I really like the color. I let them dry out then plant them in a group in the spring. They will be small and grass-like for awhile but every year the bulbs get bigger and bigger.

Deanna from USA asks: i set my calla lilly outside on a fairly warm day and not in direct sunlight. the actual calla lilly bent and drooped over is there anything that i can do to save it

Help Deanna with an answer

Grace says : The Calla Lilly is actually bent over because it is seeding. WHen it bends over you will notice a type of pod starting on the inside of the lilly and soon enough you will notice a seed pod will grow inside the actual flower. This is a natural process of the calla lilly.

Daniele from USA asks: My purple calla lilly has these tiny white bugs on the leaves. Is my plant sick, because it seems fairly healthy with exception of the drooping leaves? How can I get rid of the bugs?

Help Daniele with an answer

Betty says : This is too funny. I just got finished cleaning my Call Lillie with rubbing alcohol and leaching it when I decided to look up some info on those little bugs when I saw your question.I noticed them today and I remember doing this with another plant that had white cottony bugs. You pour some rubbing alcohol into a throw away cup and use a Qtip dipped in it to remove the bugs. This will kill them. Keep dipping the Qtip to clean it off. Make sure you do the whole stem, underside of the leaf and top, even go into a curled up leaf too. When you`ve finished cleaning it, take your pot to a deep sink, fill the sink with warm water high enough to cover the pot. Submerge the pot and hold it under for a few minutes till it stops making air bubbles. Drain the water out and let the pot sit there till it`s drained. Wipe off your pot and put it in a place that has lots of sun light but not direct. That should pretty much take care of your problem. Use this on any plant to rid it of bugs.

Krista from USA asks: I have an indoor calla lilly. Two questions to keep this pretty little plant happy... 1) Is it alright to cut blooms of the plant? 2) Its looking really droopy. It is getting good sunlight and I keep it moist. What can I do to get it to perk up?

Help Krista with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : Yes it is alright to cut the blooms of the plant. Calla lilies should be kept moist and never let dry out, otherwise the lily may start to go dormant (if it is allowed to dry out). Daytime temperatures around 75 F°. and nighttime temperatures around 60 F°. can be maintained, the lilies will grow quickly. They should receive full sunshine between September and June. In there actively grow, the lilies may be fertilized once a month with a houseplant fertilizer such as 20-20-20.

Jilian from US asks: I bought my Cala`s a few weeks ago, they had quite a bit of leaves and a hand full of buds. Since I have re-potted them they were doing great. So I thought. I live in San Diego and they are under a north to north west window. They opened up beautifully and looked great. I was watering everyday. Since they have started drooping, even the leaves. They have not lost any color or anything. So I thought maybe I was over-watering and I cut back to watering only when the top of the soil felt a little dry. This is about 2-3 times a week. I have also noticed these little gnat looking bugs crawing and flying around. I am not sure what is causing either of these symptoms (drooping, bugs). Do I have to trim the flowers back? If so where do I cut it? Please help I really love Lillies, they are my favorite flower and this is the firt time I have tried to grow them. I dont want them to die.

Help Jilian with an answer

Betty says : Try leeching the pot. Submerge the whole pot in water that is high enough to cover it. Let it set there for a few minutes, you`ll loose some of the soil but that`s ok. Drain the water and let the pot set to drain it`s self, your problem should be solved.

Jilian from US asks: I bought my Lilly a few weeks ago from a store. It was already pretty tall and had some buds. I want to keep it indoors so I have re-potted it and the buds opened quickly and beautifully. There is only one leaf that has a few spots on it, almost looks like it was burned. Everything else looks healthy and green blooms are still open, but it is drooping. It is right under a north facing window. At first I thought I was over-watering, so I backed off and only water when the top of the soil is dry, (about 1-2 times a week). I have noticed some gnats or something, they almost look like fruit flies. And from reading other posts, my leaves are not dripping like others have said. I dont know why they are drooping. I thought maybe they are just too heavy but even the leaves droop down. Do I have to cut them back, if so where do I cut them? Or could it be because of the gnats?

The flowers have completely died, and all that remains is weeping, yellowish, with some still life leaves? What should I do to save this once beautiful plant?

Amy Stuart from United States asks: My girlfriend got me a calla lilly plant for Valentine`s Day. It is starting to wilt on me. I would like tips and info on how to care for it because none came with it. Thank you, Amy

Help Amy Stuart with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Mairan says : Plant calla lilies outdoors in a location that gets bright, morning light. They appreciate some afternoon shade, especially in hot summer areas. Callas grow best in a moist soil amended with organic matter. Set rhizomes 4 to 6 inches deep and 1 to 2 feet apart. They can be planted 6 to 12 inches apart when grown in pots. Fertilize monthly. Keep well watered and weeded. Callas are frost-sensitive, but in USDA zones 8 and 9 they can be left in the ground if mulched with bark or straw before winter. In colder areas, lift the rhizomes after first frost, clean off excess soil, let dry out of the direct sun for a few days, then store in a dry location that remains between 50 and 60 degrees F. Plant in spring after the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed. For more tips look at the Q&A index- Calla lily.

Sharon from USA asks: I just purchased a calla lilly. I live in South Florida where the weather is in the 80-90s most of the year. How do I care for my calla?

Help Sharon with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : Calla lilies should be kept moist and never let dry out, otherwise the lily may start to go dormant (if it is allowed to dry out). They should receive full sunshine between September and June. In there actively grow, the lilies may be fertilized once a month with a houseplant fertilizer such as 20-20-20. Bring them in when it gets cool in the fall, let tops dry out and store bulbs, tubers etc. or, treat as a housplant with moderate indoor light.

Mary from USA asks: Hello, I have a Calla Lilly I have been trying to kill off. It was planted in my front garden years abo by a previous owner and it has never looked good. I fianlly decided to get rid of it and I want to plant other plants there that as less desirable to slugs. I have tried just about everything and it keeps coming back. What is the best way to get rid of it? Thanks, Mary

Help Mary with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : The best way to get rid off it is by digging. Try to dig every little peace of the lily. That`s for sure the most friendly way. But you can try a poison such as glyfosfaat (roundup) but you must always becareful when you use a poison like that. Be sure you spray it only on the lily leaves.

Should I use miracle gorw soil. that has the white moisture beads in it? Also, Can it be infront of the porch for interact light? I have an apt. but it is kind of dark, due to the winter weather. I would also like to know if you can give me Care instructions, when to water it, how deep to plant it, what soil to use? Why does it Drip water out of the leaves and buds? Help Breezieseas with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : For Calla Lily care you can look at the Q&A index by Calla lily. Use for the soil a good mix of potting soil and peat. Also you can find there why they drip. They can be healthy also when they don`t drip.

Suzanne Kannan from USA asks: I received a beautiful, very large calla lilly plant. I live in the SE US and have it inside right now. Please advise me on the best way to care for my lilly until I can plant it outside. The leaves and blooms are already starting to droop. Thank you for you help.

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : Calla lilies should be kept moist and never let dry out, otherwise the lily may start to go dormant (if it is allowed to dry out). Daytime temperatures around 75 F°. and nighttime temperatures around 60 F°. can be maintained, the lilies will grow quickly. They should receive full sunshine between September and June. In there actively grow, the lilies may be fertilized once a month with a houseplant fertilizer such as 20-20-20.

opal from new zealand asks: i have arhizome (plant root)it has 6 nobs on it and growth coming off each one. can i divide it and how would i go about it. cheers

Help opal with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : Yes you can divide it. Separate the roots. You may need a knife to separate some of the older roots. Each piece must have an eye or growing point on it. Let the cut-up rhizomes dry for a few days before planting them.

Leah from USA asks: Hello, I love calla`s they are my favorite flower. I recently bought a plant and live in florida, i want it to be indoors because it gets to the 40`s at night during the winter. my question is how much should i water it, does it like direct sun and also once in a while it lets out a liquid that looks and tasets like water. It comes out from the tips of the leaves. I dont know what it could be but it drips on the floor and i dont know if it will ever stop. Thank you

Help Leah with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : Yes it´s normal that your calla lily sometimes drips. There is nothing wrong with it.(Plant leaves contain small openings called stomatal and hydathodes). It must be kept moist. Yes it like full sunshine but must light filtered shade only during the hottest part of the day in summer.

Sherry from USA asks: I purchased three calla lilies from the store last week. They were a little dry, but looked fine other than that. I noticed yesterday that they have started weeping (dripping) a sticky/water drip from the end of the leaves. It is a mess, and it is to cold to place them outside (its snowing). Whay are they dripping, and can I stop them somehow?

Help Sherry with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : The `weeping/dripping` is quite normal with calla lilies and while it often worries the people, there is nothing wrong with your lily. (Lily leaves contain small openings called stomatal and hydathodes). They must be kept moist during the growing/flowering . When this is done, the moisture makes its way up through the vascular tissue to these openings and bleeds out as droplets. So this is quite normal and it shows that the lily is well functioning. So you can´t stop the calla lily. Don´t give it too much water and they don´t do this always.

Donnea from USA asks: I live in Tucson Az. I just purchased a Calla Lily from a store. But I do not know how to care for it. Can you help me? It is in a small pot but the leaves are big with 4 flowers already on there and a couple died. Please help me.....D.Detmayer

Allison says : Calla lillies need shade and no frost, they don`t really like cold. Bring them in when it gets cool in the fall, let tops dry out and store bulbs, tubers etc. or, treat as a housplant with moderate indoor light, (you don`t need grow lights). (Leave out all year round in warm climates, zones, 8-. Keep in the shade outside, fertile soil. moist but not wet, if using for cut flowers cut stalks near base.

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : You can plant Calla`s in the full ground or in a container. When you plant them in the full ground you must keep the ground very moist. If you want to plant the Calla`s in a container you must keep the ground a little bit moist. Calla`s can grow in the half shade and also in the full sun. In the summer you have to give the Calla`s a lot of water. After flowering you can cut the blooms from your Calla back, not to far but above the leaves.

Angela says : In our climate the zantedescha lilly (calla lilly) is an indoor plant.

Casie says : The calla lily is not hardy in many zones, and will die in the winter if it isn`t dug up and stored in the winter. The coolest temp it will live through is 50-55 degrees F. It should be dug when the leaves turn yellow or when foliage is damaged by frost. Store the rhizome (root thing) in sphagnum peat moss or vermiculite in a cool dark place.

Tim from USA asks: I have Calla Lillies growing like mad in my flower bed. I do not particularly want them there and have pulled them out by the roots numerous times, yet they seem to grow back even more than before. How do I get rid of them completely?

Help Tim with an answer

Yourgarden specialist Marian says : Dig them completely out and be sure you have all the roots.

Jean from USA asks: What do you do with calla lillie seeds?

Help Jean with an answer

Yourgarden specialist Marian says : You can dry the seeds and then plant the seeds no deeper then 1 cm. Give them a sunny, warm place to stand and keep them moist. If they grown two leaves (or three) you can separate the new plants. Some seeds come up fast (about 5 days) but others after a month or more. So have patients. Don't expect the first year blooms. Hopefully in the second year.

James Wilson from USA asks: Here in St. Louis, MO, USDA Hardiness Zone warmer 6th, white callas seem to winter over if mulched well. I haven't had red ones come up again. Could there be more cold-tolerance than is generally supposed?

Help James Wilson with an answer

Yourgarden specialist Marian says : Sometimes they can survive in the ground when they mulched (protected) well from the cold. You have luck. Normally they can't stand the cold winters.
