| Vannessa from Australia asks: |
My ferns leaves are turning yellow and getting brown on the edges. It is summer in Australia though they only get the morning sun. Could this be slatter bugs? I have had a problem with slatters previously in this area of the garden.

| John Wells from USA asks: |
My staghorn fern recently developed small (~2mm), hard, brown, "spots" or "nodules," for lack of better description. As well, the leaves are "sticky" and drip onto the counter below. I have had this plant for years, with no such problem. Can you tell me what might be causing this and how I might treat it? Thank you.

| Tracy from USA asks: |
I have a fern that is 2 years old. It`s very large. I keep it in my sunroom in the winter month`s. In the spring, I put it outside on my patio. It`s shady and the fern loves it. Now, it`s so large I have little room for it in my sunroom. Can I trim it back or put it outside in a place protected from frost for the winter. Georgia winters are not real cold all the time.

| linda lauenstein from usa asks: |
I have a staghorn thats is almost dead. Hardly any leaves but its huge. How do I cut it back to get it back to good health?
Help linda lauenstein with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
You can remove dead branchng fronds, if there are any, but you should probably leave the shield fronds alone, and cutting off parts of the branching. For more taking care tips look at Q&A-index at staghorn fern.

It is such an odd plant I just done know how to plant the peaces and she wanted to seperate hers but is not sure how to do that eather. Also the pot you put it in dose it have to have a drainage or not. As much information as possible on this plant would be great. It is really hard to find information on it. | Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
If they are broken parts then they won`t root. The most successful way to propagate the Rabbit`s Foot Fern is division of rhizomes. Simply pull apart pieces of these rhizomes that have roots, and plant them in a new pot. Place your "Rabbit-foot Fern" in bright indirect light or filtered light. Avoid areas of high heat as this will burn the delicate fronds. Keep the soil moist but not soggy and yes it must be well drained.

| Barb Szalinski from USA asks: |
I planted two "Ponytail" ferns in front of my house last summer. They grew well and looked great. Over the winter, they turned brown and I figured they were just dormant for the winter. They do not show any signs of turning green and I do not see new growth coming. Are they dead? Should I have cut them back? Thanks.

I live in Charleston, SC. I have had my large rabbit foot fern, in a pot, on my front porch for many years. It looks great. I have one in the house. When doing some work in my flower beds I noticed some small RFF`s growing at the base of an oak tree. Email me for more information.......Diane

The rabbit foot fern can live in the usda hardiness zone 10a -11. I believe that Georgia has a hardiness zone of 8a. If so you can`t keep your fern in the winter outside.

| Erin Hermance from USA asks: |
I received a fern for a wedding gift in May. It was root bound and dying 1 month later and I repotted it and left it on my "three seasons" porch...Duh! Now, it`s completely dead. Any chance it will re-generate in the spring?
Help Erin Hermance with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
I donīt know what kind of fern you have (specie)but there are species that arenīt hardy. If they have been grown indoors they may not survive a winter outdoors. So if you want to be sure you have to wait for the spring and see but Iīm afraid it will not come back.

| Mary from USA asks: |
I attached the staghorn on a piece of wood with fishing line and hung the wood in my lower level, which is cool. I mist it once a week, the fronds and the root system, but recently noticed the fronds are turning brown and looks very dry. I started to mist every day, but doesn`t seem to make a difference. Do I need to soak it?
Help Mary with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
Feed you staghorn fern with organic food such as fish emulsion fertilizer. Donīt overwater your staghorn. Water about once a week and soak the moss to do so. The water will pour through quickly so you`ll have to apply a lot of water to get a little wetness in the moss...if you have let it dry out too much. If you keep the moss moderately moist, this will not be a problem. Water with rain water if possible. Give it a place where bright light but no direct sun is.
