Laura from USA asks:
Can figs be picked prior to their rippening on the tree? What I am getting to is this: if we allow them to ripen on the tree, the birds get to them first. So, can they be picked, then allow them to ripen by setting them out on a hot screened porch?

It sounds like stress. Try mulching with leaves or grass clippings around the base of the trees. Keep the soil moist, not wet or dry, around the trees.

ginger from USA asks:
I have a fig tree that I keep indoors, I live in the northeastern part of the United states. I have had it for three years and the first two years I had more than two dozen figs each year. This year it started out great with more than 15 figs already starting. I do not know if this disease is the same or not but I purchased some eggplant plants and they were right outside the door. Their leaves started to turn brown and ugly. On Sunday I noticed this was happening. On Tuesday night I noticed my fig tree had brown spots that seemed to merge together and a few of the figs also have brown spots. Is this Fig Rust? I am so disappointed, I do not want to loose the tree. If I spray it with neutral copper spray, which most nurseries claims works, will this prevent the rust from spreading from the other leaves. Should I cut the brown spotted leaves off, Should I remove the brow spotted figs????? Please advise

Marie from UK asks:
Hi, my fig tree started out tiny (had it since April) but did beautifully all through summer. It has grown to nearly 3` tall. Now that autumn is here, the leaves are turning yellow; is this normal? It is in a corner against our very high brick walls in the courtyard, where it is completely sheltered from any harsh winds. Can someone tell me how to winterise it; for instance, do I still water it all through the winter months? The soil is moist now. Will the leaves fall off eventually and if so, do I just leave it alone or do I have to cut it down? Cheers for your suggestions, Marie

tony burke says :
if you live in a cold climate you have to wrap the tree and protect the roots. i wrap mine with burlap, then plastic. then i lay bags of topsoil around the base of the tree to prevent the frost from penetrating the roots.

m.muscat from Malta asks:
the fig fruit, while still raw, is becoming black and falls off the tree. Every fallen fruit is sort of bitten / pierced like with a needle, once or several times However, no maggots seem to be inside ; there is sort of brown powder between the skin and the flesh inside.
I have sprayed the tree, every nine days with insecticide (permasect) for about 5 times this year but no positive results!!!! WHat can I do to save the rest of the fruit? what might the problem be?

pam bowman from united states asks:
can I root a clipping from a fig tree to gree another fig tree? if so how to do it

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says :
Yes you can. The best way is to take eight- to 10-inch pieces from two to three-year-old wood about three quarters of an inch in diameter be cut in winter or early spring. They can be placed in pots in a warm location, or they can be set out in the ground where they can remain permanently. They will need to be kept moist, but not wet. Figs like good drainage. They don`t do well below 20 degrees for an extended time so place them inside.

Barb says :
Yes, I put a couple of four-inch fig tree cuttings into water and left it in a bright but not directly sun-lit areas for a number weeks (ignoring it, mostly) and they rooted vigorously and are now thriving in pots.

william mcmaster says :
Yes Candy. It is just like taking cuttings although i would dip the ends in hormone rooting powder first. If you do this in mid summer you should be able to double your stock in fig trees in no time. You can actualy do this with most plants/trees. Best of luck. Willie.
