| Linda says : |
I live in Mobile, AL. I`ve lived in the same house for 15 yrs, and always trim my gardenia`s shortly after they have finished blooming. A tip also, if you interested in starting new bushes...pick some of the flowers with longer stems, and put in a vase of water. After the flowers die, remove all of the leaves and flower, except the top 2. Keep in fresh water in a window sill (I put mine in a west facing window in my kitchen). They will eventually begin to root. I usually let them root until the roots are about an inch long. Then plant in a pot. They will thrive if you keep them inside thru the first winter. Good luck.

| Pat Dooley from USA asks: |
I have a beautiful healthy gardenia which I bought at
Walmart about 2 months ago. It as loaded with buds and
many of them bloomed but a lot didn`t. When I looked
close I saw tiny white "foam" at the junctures of new
growth. I sprayed with ivory soap like I always try first
but it hasn`t deterred whatever it is. I see the words
"cottony cushion" listed as a problem but does explain it.
Somehow I feel that describes this stuff. I feel it`s
getting ready to drop my buds again. And yet, the plant
itself is in beautiful condition, growing like crazy.
Any idea, anyone?

Never spray the leafs or flowers of a gardenia. Are you sure you don`t have white flies? The gardenia is much like a rose in the type of pest it gets. But,directly watering the leafs and flower buds of these bushes will cause the buds to drop off. It`s much better to hose soak every couple days or so.use mulch around the base to cut back on the watering needs.it really helps to raise the humidity of the plant.keep moist but,not wet and do not let it dry out.most importantly use an acid base fert.beginning in spring and then summer.never in the fall or winter.I have gardenias that My grandmother planted when I was about 4 years old.I`m now 50ish and they`re still here.

| Deirdre M. Gaffney from NC, USA asks: |
I just recently purchased a Gardenia from a nursery it was in perfect shape, large, with a lot of buds. I got it for my mom, who has tried to grow one, but it died.
My problem is just general care overall for this plant. I am keeping it inside, but I would also like any info on planting this beautiful plant outside, since I am going to buy another one just for that purpose.
I went thru several sites to find out just general care. What I found was contradicting instructions on each one! For example, one said to mist the leaves, one said don`t because it is bad for the leaves. one told me that it needed cooler temp, and bright but filtered sunlight, and then I read that it needed lots of warmth and humidity. I also read 10 different soil and fertilzer tips.Basically every detrimental advice I need I cannot get, I do not know which one to believe!
I bought the plant almost 2 weeks ago, in perfect condition. At first I left it out in a sunnny area, and then the leaves started turning yellow and flower buds began to drop, so I moved it to a shady area, and it didn`t seem to help. I live in North Carolina, so it is getting really hot and humid, so when I read one of the sites, it said that Gardenias cannot tolerate to much heat. I then brought it inside, moved it to a room that has bright light, and a stable temp, about 75 degrees and it seems to be doing fine, more green than yellow, so I am hoping it will be ok.
So my question(s)are just general info on care, watering, what kind of fertilzer and how much and when, would clipping some stems encourage new growth? What kind of soil is best, basically everything on how to care for this beautiful plant.
Also, is it normal for the floweers to turn yellow? They start out white, then some have turned yellow. They smell great still and the flowers look healthy when they turn yellow.
And finally, can you clip off some stems to start a new plant? Does it need to be in water, or put right in dirt?
I am hopeful that this plant will make it, but I need to know how to care for it!
I hope I can get these questions answered, and thank you for your time. I will be grateful for any info.
Sincerely,
Deirdre
M.
Gaffney

right or wrong you can get all the answers you could ever need on the net!I have a gardenia that my grandmother planted when I was 4.I am now 50ish.My wife has successfully transplanted part of this bush in the house.yes you need to help it out with it`s light needs by supplying an artificial source but, only if the sun from it`s window spot isn`t doing the job.You got the temp right. They love 70`s and 50`s as a night temp.A well drained soil is best but,you have to get the watering just right.you never want to let it dry out but,you don`t want it wet.just keep it moist.and NEVER NEVER EVER spray the leafs or flowers of a gardenia.this will cause them to yellow and fall off.Use an acid fert.only in spring and summer never in fall or winter.Growing a new plant is possible but,you have got to control the light the temp and the humidity.NC is about the best place for growing these plants though so,you got that going for it.Most problems though are watering problems.get that down and you will be an expert!!Remember these plants came from China(so does more than 80% of all the products you buy in a Wal-mart store these days. Please keep that in mind the next time you pass a mom and pop store on the way to visit wally world. They`ve sent a million jobs over seas.Do you know anyone who is out of work?)Also these plants suffer from the same pest that most roses suffer look for the signs!Use dry insect control.

Are the leaves also yellow? Gardenias are plants that need to be in an acidic growing media. If not then leaves turn yellow and fall off. If this is the problem then repot it into a peat-based media and add the recommended amount of Osmocote Slow-Release Fertilizer. For more tips look at our Q&A-index Gardenia.

As for your gardenias, that`s another story. At first I thought they were loosing leaves because of the rough ride here. | Krissi from USA asks: |
I inherited a 30 year old gardenia bush from my mother who loved this flower and the bush for many years. I`m afraid I`m killing it. After it bloomed a few flowers in July and August, it looks to be losing more and more leaves. They turn brown and fall off in many spots and in others, the leaves are green and healthy. I wasn`t sure if this was a normal seasonal progression for the bush/tree. My husband and I thought at first we weren`t watering it enough but now I think we are watering it too much!! Please help as I don`t want it to die!!! Also, should I prune the branches that have lost all it`s leaves? Will this promote new growth? It is inside and is quite overgrown for the corner it`s in. It`s in a rather big pot and I`m questioning whether to transplant it to give it better fertilizer, mulch to keep it moist and a better drainage system. t also doens`t get very much sun. Any help would be greatly appreciated because this plant, as you can imagine is of great sentimental value to me. Thanks!!

Gardenia`s like acidic soil. I planted one today and mixed peat moss with my native soil, and added some humus. It is in an area that gets 8 hours of sunlight/day. I read on a blog that they like filtered sun, like from a pine tree, but my neighbor has a beautiful one that is in full sun and has survived for 10 years. I bought a standard gardenia about 3 weeks ago and put it in a sunny spot on my deck. When we had our first frost, I brought it inside and then when the weather warmed, i took it back out. Now all of the leaves in the center of the plant are turning yellow. I was reluctant to fertilize before brining in for the winter, but was wondering if I need to do miracid? Is this just a "stress" reaction to all of the changes? It will spend the winter in a south-facing window in my bedroom--should I just move it there now? Thanks so much--having this plant has been a dream of mine for many years! I don`t want to kill it now that I finally have it! :-)

| Joe S from USA asks: |
I live in Las Vegas, NV and this spring I purchased a Gardenia plant and had it planted by the nursery. Throughout the summer I got a lot of buds and some small full flowers. Generally, the flowers would burn before they could come to full bloom. My question is; can this plant survive in 100+ temperatures and still produce full flowers. I tried shading the plant from the late (very hot) summer sun. If your answer is no, then can I transplant this to a ceramic pot (large) and keep in under my back awning?

I am about to transplant a couple of gardenias to different parts of the yard. The area is made of mostly clay where, same as where they grew up for two years. Should I prepare that soil any different? Second I believe they need acidic fertilizer. What would you recommend. Lastly, I also have three next to each other, two of them are doing great and one is like it is not getting enough acid. They are about two feet apart. Any ideas,.

| Steve from U.S asks: |
Is there any chance a Gardenia plant will survive a Missouri winter (extended periods of below freezing temperatures every year)? I would love to be able to plant some bushes outdoors and have them renew theirselves every year.
Also, could you tell me what the difference is between a Gardenia bush and a Gardenia tree. I don`t ever recall hearing of a Gardenia tree.
Help Steve with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
If I`m correct you live in usda zone 5b till 6b. Gardenia can live in usda zone 7b till 11. So it will probably not survive in the Missouri winter.

I have had a potted gardenia for 4 years and it has done wonderfully indoors and outside (I live in Ohio). I went on vacation for two weeks this month and it didn`t rain a drop while I was away. In answer to the legginess of the Gardina bush. I live just south of Daytona Beach and this winter my four Gardina bushes got hit hard my the frost. I was ill and couldn`t cover them. In early March, which is a bit late to be pruning, I pruned each branch until I "hit" green. Two of the brushed were cut back to almost nothing. Today I have four very full bushes -- you can`t see through any of them. What I`m saying is don`t be afraid to really prune your bushes, especially those inside branches.

Your gardenia has a deficiency, and sulphate will do, epsom salts, suphate of potash or sulphate of ammonia. Just be careful not to overdo the salts, and gardenias don`t like the sun, they should be kept out of it in a semi shaded position.

I have three gardenia bushes in my front flower bed. Two of them are the double leaf and one of them is the single leaf. There are Azaleas around them. I want to move them to my side bed because my front bed isn`t symmetrical and it`s driving me crazy. I want all azaleas in my front bed and then a symmetrical mix on the side. They need to be pruned because they aren`t a very pretty shape as they have just been allowed to grow wildly (they were there when we bought the house two years ago). My side bed used to have pine trees in the yard but they have been cut down and we want to extend our bed. There is full to partial sun (more full) and the soil should already be pretty acidic due to the years of the pine trees being there. It`s the spring of the year and I`d like to move them now. Is it okay, or should I wait? They haven`t started budding out yet. What should I do? How should I prepare the soil and how should I prepare the bushes so I don`t lose them? Thanks!

Yes you can transplant them in early spring. You desribed that you have a good acid soil, so you have nothing to do with the soil. When you transplant them please becarefull with the roots(rootball). Don`t try to harm them.

| Nancy Armbruster from United States asks: |
my plant has lots of buds but is not flowering, what is wrong? It`s leaves are turning yellow also and from reading your website I see my plant needs acid, will the acid help the plant to bloom? I live in central florida and my gardenia plant is in a container and I keep it in the lanai.
Help Nancy Armbruster with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
Yes it could be. You can buy Miracid plant food that is special for acid-loving plants (NPK is 30/10/10) contains also iron . Or you can use a fertilizer for Rhododendron/Azalea. Rainwater is also a little acid. Use compost or peatmoss through the soil. Check also of the gardenia tree has whiteflies. That can also be a problem of yellow leaves.

Bright yellow lower leaves, veins and all, dropping off. No spots or pests. My dwarf gardenia (new purchase) have been in the ground since fall and now it is spring in Texas. I`ve drenched soil with chelated iron (4.6%) and later a liquid fertilizer for acid loving plants. I`m hoping that the plants will just grow out of it as spring progresses. | Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
Gardenias care indoors. They need an acid soil and should receive the same nutritional care as azaleas. The night temperature should be near 60 F° and day 68-74 F° and the humidity around the plant should be kept high. You have to give them an acid fertilizer monthly between April and November. Don`t let dry out but also don`t overwater it. Keep them moist. The pot must have drainage holes so too much water can go out. They like full sun indoors. Gardenia grown outdoors for the spring, summer and early fall, keep plants in partial shade. For more tips you can look in the Q&A index-Gardenia.

| Libby from USA asks: |
I brought my huge gardenia plant into the garage this winter. Also put a light on it.All the leaves have a crispy look and feel to them. Is it going to make it?
Help Libby with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
Too much fertilizer is usually the problem of crispy leaves or overwatering (root rot, the roots can`t take up enough water any more). Inspect the roots (dark and/or mushy roots)or smell acrid or putrid if so then repot (includes removing soil and pruning roots back to firm, healthy tissue, and repotting in a fast draining soil).

I need or rather must move a 5` tall gardenia to a spot beside a porch about 9` from it`s current location. Sun/shade/siol/water will remain the same. Should I prune it back or go as is??? Will pruning affect the blooms in spring ??/ This has to be done due to new construction. I have no rpoblem with pruning, I`d rather loose some blooms now and save the bush rather than loose it all together. The bush is 8 or more years old.
Help Laurin with an answer |

You can prune but the buds are forming now on your gardenia. So you get less or no flowers when you prune now. Pruning is usually if it´s nescesary around May or June when spring flowering is over.

| Kelly from USA asks: |
I planted a gardenia outside my home in western Tennessee last year. It did fairly well but we had a few unexpected frosts this winter and I didn`t get it covered. Now it looks dead. I was wondering if I should cut all the dead branches off, to the ground, and hope it will start again next year or if I should just leave it alone and hope there is some life still there. My green thumb is decidedly brown so any help anyone could give on pruning times and methods or anything else for this plant, please take pity on it and help! Thanks.
Help Kelly with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
Wait with cutting all the dead branches off because the winter is not over yet I think. If the winter is over you can cut them off but I don´t know how far the cold has damaged your gardenia. So you´ll have to wait. Prune gardenias after they have finished flowering.

My plants are around 3 years old can I move them to a different area in my yard.
Thank You
Help Brenda with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
Yes you can, but be careful that you don´t injure the root systems it occurs most often during transplanting so be careful. Always plant gardenias at the same depth as they grew. Don`t transplant while they are in buds unless flowers are unimportant. Best time to transplant is early to mid-fall once the plant is dormant, or early spring before growth starts.

My gardenia`s have kind of a "black mold" or "black spot" growing on them. What is the cause and what is the cure??
Is there a time to prune them in the fall or should I just prune them in the spring as one of your respondents suggested?? I live in the Atlanta, Ga. area
Thanks,
Tom
Help Tom Heisler with an answer |
| Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : |
Try to spray with a folia fungicide at regular intervals. If you have luck you can destroy your black spot. Pruning should be done just after the plant finishes blooming. Pruning befor October 1st because after, it decreases next year`s blooms.

| Gerald says : |
Don`t worry. Most Gardenias can tolerat temperatures from 10 to zero degrees F. In the winter most local rain is enough to keep it going but add a handfull of coffee grounds under the folage. In the Spring, start to give the leaves a rain type of water mist at day-break for about 10 seconds is enough to maintain its moisture requirements and will promote the buds and flowers. It will produce Great Blossom all summer long. A hand full of spent coffee gounds under the follage every couple of months should keep it Happy!.....Let me know How the gardinia is doing from time-to-time, Good luck.
sincere Gerald

My Gardenia has many buds and some blooms, but now a number of the mature buds are dropping off, before blooming. I've been watering regularly and giving acid fertiziler every 2-3 weeks, per the instructions on the box. Could I be over-fertilizing, or is it something else?
Help Patty with an answer |

It can be several causes that the buds don't come out such as low humidity, overwatering, underwatering, insufficient light and high temperatures and a salty soil. Indeed gardenias need a lot water and prefere an acid soil. Look at Q&A- gardenia for more details.
