Damon Detillion from USA asks: I have several hollys planted around my house (China girl, buford, etc.. This year they look as if they have a disease. A lot of the leaves look half burned. What could be the problem and how do I cure ?

Help Damon Detillion with an answer

Green Zeus says : If the leaves and shoots are scorched looking or wilted, this is bacterial blight. Spray with copper fungicide every 5-7 days until symptoms disappear. Do not give excessive nitrogen fertilizer to hollies, as this can cause the disease. Also, DON`T cultivate the ground under your holly--you risk infection when you do this. Any prunings should not be left in the garden. Always take the time to pick these up as they promote fungal growth that spreads to your holly.

JoAnn Santizo from Illinois, USA asks: We have had a beautiful holly bush since we moved in our home several years ago. Two years ago we removed some cedar bushes and since then the hollly bush was growing beautifully until just recently I noticed it`s leaves are turning brown. There is new growth underneath, but I don`t know what to do. Should we trim it back? Not sure if spring is right time of the year for that.

Help JoAnn Santizo with an answer

Marilyn from Northwest TN asks: I have two holly bushs and they are in need of triming. The power company cut some trees in front of the house and they messed up the holly bushes how do I get the dead limbs out or do I need to cut down and let them come back again?

Help Marilyn with an answer

Green Zeus says : Just prune the dead limbs out. Dead limbs can become diseased and spread to the rest of the shrub. Be sure to pick up all prunings as hollies are sensitive to fungus that grows in dead prunings underneath them. Also, don`t cultivate under them for the same reason.

kathy rogers from USA asks: I have black fungus covering my holly bushes. What can I use to take it off?

Help kathy rogers with an answer

Green Zeus says : It sounds like an infestation of whitefly. Do you see these white things fly up from shrub when you rub against it? You`ll also see small white pinheads under leaves. Spray shrub with insecticidal soap. If that doesn`t work, try pyrethrum. The other disease that can make the leaves black is bacterial blight. But it`s the previous year`s growth that gets black. If that is the case, spray with copper fungicide. Hope you can figure out which of these 2 diseases your holly has, as treatment for it is different.

chad mckeithen from usa asks: I have holly bush`s(trees) that are too tall. the trunk extends up about 6 feet with not growth and the the bush part of the tree extends up to about 15`-20`. ideally i would like them to be about 10 ft tall. can i literally just cut them down that low? will they grow back??

Trevor Bell from USA asks: I live in Northern Virginia. This fall both my dwarf holly trees have lost (dropped) their leaves. What has caused this, and can it be corrected.

Help Trevor Bell with an answer

Green Zeus says : There are quite a few diseases that hollies can get. It`s pretty hard to know what it is. If this was a new planting, it can fail due to lack of proper watering. It needs about an inch of water per week. They can be attacked by fungus and a variety of pests.

Walter Hackl from United States asks: I recently purchased a single Holly bush and was later told that Holly may require a Male and Female to reproduce the red berries. Is this true. I may have to allow for two in the landscaping design. Thank you.

Help Walter Hackl with an answer

Green Zeus says : Yes, that`s true. I once planted a holly, at my former home, amongst other foundation plantings and didn`t really care if it got berries on it. So I didn`t plant a male. However, after a few years it started getting berries on it anyway. Maybe there was a male plant somewhere in the neighborhood. You can plant the male somewhere else on your property. It seems it doesn`t need to be close by.

johnda surharski from us asks: I have a gril and boy bushes that just will not grow.they are beside each other I was wondering what tye of fertilizer you could use to help them grow. I`ve had they for a 3 years and they look just like they day we bought them,

Help johnda surharski with an answer

Green Zeus says : I am not an expert on hollies, but the one I had was a real slow grower too. That seemed to be a good thing because it was a foundation plant and it was rare that I had to prune it. As it got older,it seemed to grow a little faster. I have a Japanese holly, currently. Talk about a slow grower!! I fertilize mine twice a year. That has improved it, as now it is finally putting out some new growth. They like acid soil. Use a triple 19 fertilizer and apply at 1/4 cup per 3 feet of height around the drip edge of the shrub. Fertilize in spring after the threat of killing frost. You can fertilize it again but no later than June 25.

Joe from USA asks: How do you prune holly bushes at this time of the year (End of April, beginning of May)?

Help Joe with an answer

Yourgarden Specialist Marian says : In late winter or early spring is the best time to prune your hollies. You can prune back the shrubs either 1/3 to 1/2 to rejuvenate the shrubs, but if you need to prune to keep the holly within bounds in the area, then you can prune them back to approximately 12 inches from the ground. This severe pruning should not be done on an annual basis, use the 1/3 to 1/2 which is the best for the shrubs. Cut at a node, just above a lateral bud.

tim donovan from usa asks: What could be causing my Holly bushes to die. They seem to get very dry leaves and stems, and some have brown spots on the leaves.

Help tim donovan with an answer

Green Zeus says : It sounds like either bacterial blight or leaf spot. Both are controlled with copper fungicide applied every 5-7 days until symptoms disappear. They say not to give hollies excessive nitrogen fertilizer and not to cultivate under the shrub because this increases the chances of several diseases in these plants. It is reported that copper fungicide may damage the foliage of holly and leave unattractive residue. Wettable sulfur can also be used if you think it`s leaf spot.

Rita Pondolph says : I have a tall beautiful holly bush with a few other branches grown beside them near the barks the bush had beautiful red berries over the winter the birds love my hollybush now we noticed there are no berries and all the leaves are turning brown and dry what can we do to save it is very tall Thanks so much for your help
